This past Sunday featured one of the more dramatic finishes the PGA Tour has seen in years when Jordan Spieth took down Daniel Berger in a playoff with an epic bunker hole-out and celebration to win the Travelers Championship. It was a far cry from the anti-climatic beatdown Brooks Koepka put on Erin Hills when he pounded it into submission at the U.S. Open the week before.
Besides the fact one is a major, the one glaring difference between the two was the length of the course. TPC River Highlands played nearly 1,000 yards shorter, yet the winning score was higher. There’s a lesson to be learned here and former World No.1 Luke Donald articulated it perfectly.
Love that -12 won this week on a 6850 yard course, last week at Erin Hills 7650 yards & -16 wins. Making courses long isn’t the answer!

Because the major problem with long golf courses is that they take longer to play! https://t.co/S83YHt8Z51

Donald didn’t play in the U.S. Open and missed the cut at the Travelers, but given his track record and $35 million plus in career PGA Tour earnings, he may have a point.
