Everybody likes to take on the hero shot, whether you’re Rory McIlroy or Joe Hacker. The only difference is after Rory failed at his first attempt during the first round of the DP World Tour Championship, he didn’t go full lumberjack and keep chopping until the ball was extracted.
Instead, McIlroy hopped out of the hazard, assessed his options, rolled up his pant leg and hit a great recovery shot to give himself a good bogey chance. Although McIlroy would miss that bogey putt, at least he didn’t go full Stenson to hit out of the hazard.
