Phil the Thrill doing Phil the Thrill things. Why do we love Phil Mickelson so much? Because shortly after running in the miraculous 94-foot, 7-inch putt on Thursday at the Tour championship, Lefty’s scorecard began to celebrate the start of fall by turning into a Thanksgiving decoration.

Mickelson’s 4-over par 74 has him in a five-way tie for 24th place, meaning that the World Golf Hall of Famer is beating exactly two people at the 30-man season finale. He trails first-round co-leaders Dustin Johnson, Hideki Matsuyama and Kevin Chappell by eight strokes. All that means is that if Mickelson can shoot a low one on Friday, he’s back in the hunt.
12 players shot under par at East Lake on Thursday, including Rory McIlroy whose streaks of three birdies and a row and four birdies in a row were interrupted by two double bogeys in a row.
We could be in for a wild weekend in Atlanta.
