Cantlay Chips Over Bunker in Green, Makes Par

The par-3 6th hole at Riviera is one of the most iconic on the course.

A mid-length par-3, the 6th’s obvious defining feature is its bunker placed smack in the middle of the green creating a donut-shaped putting surface that requires a precise shot to every pin position.

Patrick Cantlay has already proven to know how to hit the right notes on the short par-3. On Friday, Cantlay came within a whisker of acing the hole and on Saturday, he nearly holed out again, only this time from the green.

An up-and-down round to that point, Cantlay hit his approach to the sixth on the wrong side of the green, which left that pesky bunker between him and the cup. Cantlay showed his skill and imagination with his second shot — technically a putt — that nearly turned into an improbable birdie.

Cantlay would go on to shoot a 2-under par 69 and earn a spot in the final pairing with Bubba Watson on Sunday.
