Phil Casually Putts Ball Off Green On Purpose

Phil Mickelson is doing Phil Mickelson things at the Farmers Insurance Open this week at Torrey Pines. We all know he’s a short game wizard, but what he did on Thursday with these two shots was absolutely mesmerizing.

The first one came on the par-5 fifth hole on the North Course, which was his 14th of the day. Phil had a lengthy eagle look, but it was evident even on TV that there was a ridge impeding Lefty from making an actual stroke toward the hole. Instead, Phil did what he does best. He aimed away from the cup, drilled the putt which crept into the rough, and then used the slope to bring it back down towards the hole leaving Terry Gannon and Nick Faldo basically speechless. Let that soak in for a second – he putted it off of the green! Oh, and he made the come-backer for birdie!

Then on the eighth hole, his 17th, he found himself in the thick stuff just off the green. Having virtually no room, plus needing to land it on a downslope, he pulled off this 64-degree wedge masterpiece.

After 2 rounds, Phil finds himself T-48, -1 overall. In case you’re wondering, the power grouping of Tiger (+4), Jason Day (+3) and Dustin Johnson (+2) all missed the cut.
