Reed Solidifies Ryder Cup Spot With Win Over Fowler

A pair of United States Ryder Cup fringe players came into Sunday at Bethpage Black looking to solidify themselves as automatic qualifiers for Captain Davis Love III’s team and Patrick Reed was the one to do it.

Trailing 54-hole leader Rickie Fowler by a stroke to start the day, Reed overcame three bogeys in the middle of his round to finish strongly and claim his first win of the PGA Tour season. The victory cemented Reed’s automatic qualifying position on the Ryder Cup squad, while Fowler showed some long overdue form that should put him squarely on DL3’s radar when he makes his first round of captain’s picks in two weeks.

Reed’s 10-under par mark put him two shots clear of Emiliano Grillo and Sean O’Hair who finished tied for second. Jason Day, Adam Scott and Gary Woodland finished tied for fourth at 7-under par. Fowler, Ryan Moore and Jason Kokrak finished four shots back at 6-under par.
