Throw Back: Robot Aces 16th At TPC Scottsdale

With record crowds upwards of 200,000, the Waste Management Phoenix Open’s 16th hole at TPC Scottsdale truly is one of the most exciting arenas in sports. The electricity is palpable with a constant buzz in the air as players are judged on their every move. Of course, the only way to win the raucous gallery over is with an ace, which has only been done nine times in competition. No wonder why they call it “The Coliseum.”

But if this clip from 2016 isn’t proof robots are eventually going to take over the world, we don’t know what it is. Its name is “Eldrick” and it made an ace during a practice round on its fifth shot. The gallery went nuts littering the green with beer in appreciation as if it were a human.

Obviously, 16 has produced its fair share of excitement over the years, but nothing was more wild than this ace by Tiger back in 1997:

What a difference 20 years makes!
