Rocco Mediate made headlines earlier this week when he spoke about what he described as his “habitual alcoholism.”
After a down year in 2017, Mediate gave up alcohol altogether in an effort to live a healthier life and play better golf. Both goals seem to have been accomplished in the short term as the runner-up at the 2008 U.S. Open has noticeably slimmed down and he’s back pulling off incredible shots.
Playing this week at the Oasis Championship in Boca Raton, Florida, Rocco found himself seemingly stymied behind a tree 105 yards out from the green on the par-4 12th hole during Friday’s first round.
Mediate put a beautiful punch-draw swing on the shot, likely hoping to find somewhere near the putting surface. Instead, the ball took a fortuitous bounce off the fairway and headed straight for the cup.
The hole-out eagle 2 was Rocco’s second of the day — he previously holed out on the par-4 4th hole as well — and led to a back-nine 2-under par 34, and a 4-under par round.
A second round 2-under par 70, albeit sans hole-outs, has Rocco at 6-under par for the event and in a tie for 18th place, six shots behind the 36-hole leader, Bernhard Langer, who finished his second round with an eagle of his own.
