Rory Still Battling Rib Injury, Future Uncertain

Is Rory McIlroy’s 2017 season over? According to him, it could be.

Speaking after his final round at the PGA Championship where he posted a 3-under par 68, his best round of the week and good enough for a T22 finish, the four-time major winner revealed that he is still battling pain from the rib injury which kept him on the sidelines earlier this year, and it doesn’t sound great.

“It’s sort of the way it has been the last few weeks,” McIlroy said. “Right now it’s a tough one because I go out there and play and shoot decent scores, but when I come off the course I can feel my left rhomboid going into spasm. Inside of my left arm goes numb.”

McIlroy plans to fly back home to Northern Ireland in the next few days and visit with trainer Steve McGregor to evaluate his options.

“I don’t know what I’m going to do,” he said. “You might not see me until next year. You might see me in a couple weeks’ time. It really depends.”

“I just haven’t allowed it the time to fully heal,” McIlroy said about the injury. “I wanted to play this season. I feel like I’m capable of playing well and winning and putting rounds together. If I want to challenge on a more consistent basis, I need to get 100 percent healthy.”

Besides his health, McIlroy also has to figure out a more permanent solution for his caddie, not to mention the fact he is the defending FedEx Cup champion. That’s just the short term. As for the long term, he’s got his sights set on the Masters for good reason: the career grand slam.

“April is a long way away,” McIlroy said. “That’s the next big thing on my radar.”
