Rory on Fescue: It’s a U.S. Open, Hit the Fairway

Rory McIlroy always brings the heat during his press conferences, especially during a major week. The four-time major champion took the podium on Tuesday to discuss a host of things including his health, his equipment changes, and the topic of the day, the fescue. When asked about what he thought of the USGA’s decision to cut it back, Rory answered candidly per the usual.

“We have 60 yards from rough line to rough line. You’ve got 156 of the best players in the world here. If we can’t hit it within that avenue, you might as well pack your bags and go home,” McIlroy said. “These are the widest fairways we’ve ever played in a U.S. Open. Even the first and second cut is another 10 yards on top of that. So if you’ve got 50 or 60 yards to hit into and you’re complaining about the fescue that’s wider than that, I don’t think that’s an issue.”

To be fair, it appeared Rory wasn’t aware of the developments prior to being asked the question and may have assumed the decision was due to player complaints. The USGA went on the record stating that this was part of the plan all along.

That still doesn’t mean he doesn’t have a point.
