Scott McCarron has had his share of good fortune. The 51-year-old has been on the PGA Tour since 1995 and has accrued over $12 million playing golf for a living, but on Saturday in Hawaii, the three-time winner got a full dose of bad luck.
Playing in the first round of Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai Golf Club, McCarron found the fairway at the par-4 sixth hole and left himself a wedge into the green. The approach hung out to the right by just a few yards before catching one of the most unlucky bounces imaginable. Not only did the ball ricochet off of the sprinkler and much farther away from the green than where he would have been, but it came to rest on some volcanic rock.
McCarron was forced to take a drop from the dried lava, and what should have been an easy up-and-down for par turned into a double bogey. He would overcome that double — and later a triple bogey — to shoot an even-par round of 72. He followed that up with a 7-under par 65 in the second round, and McCarron enters Sunday eight shots back of the leader, Bernhard Langer.
