Sung Kang Chunk-Tops Fairway Wood on 72nd Hole

No one is immune to a bad shot, not even the pros. On Sunday afternoon in Malaysia, Sung Kang was faced with a long second shot into the par-5 18th needing a birdie to earn a solo third-place finish, the equivalent of $70,000.

Pulling a fairway wood, Kang wound up and did something every amateur golfer can relate to: he chunk-topped the wood and watched as the ball rolled haplessly down the fairway. However, the similarities between Kang and the guy in your weekend game ended there.

He hit his third shot just over the green on the 634-yard hole and got up-and-down, salvaging a par and a share of third place with Xander Schauffele that paid out $406,000. Never truer was the golf adage that it’s not where you hit your bad shots, it’s how you recover from them.

Perhaps it was a bit of karma for Kang after he ribbed his playing partner, eventual winner Pat Perez, for laying up off of the 18th tee with a four-shot lead.
