Wherever Phil Mickelson goes, a story generally follows. Take this year’s Ryder Cup for example. While some may have a serious tone, others are quite the opposite. In fact, sometimes they’re downright hilarious. Longtime caddie, Jim ‘Bones’ Mackay was speaking with PGA.com this week, when he unleashed this juicy little nugget that occurred during the 1996 U.S. Open at Southern Hills.
Allow us to set the scene for you. It was Thursday morning of a major and Bones was driving with Phil in the parking lot going “a half a mile an hour” when a pedestrian got in the way.
“There was this gentleman alongside our car who decided to take a left turn, walked right into the side of our car, he bumped into the car, said, ‘Oh, I’m sorry and went on his way,’ ” Mackay said.
No big deal, right? Well, it wouldn’t have been other than the fact Phil convinced two cops to join in on a prank he was cooking up.
“I go to the range, Phil goes to put on his shoes, and the next thing I know, I have two officers tap me on the shoulder who tell me I’m being investigated for felony hit-and-run,” Mackay said. “So here we are 45 minutes before our tee time, and they’re talking about putting me in cuffs. So I was stressed to say the least.”
“I somehow looked over out of the corner of my eye and I saw Phil behind a tree giggling,” Mackay said.
“I’m still a little sore about (it),” Mackay said, with a smile.
