Cynics of “The Match,” the $9-million, winner-take-all, made-for-television pay-per-view event between Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson taking place the day after Thanksgiving are going to have a hard time hating on this idea: documented and unprecedented access to the two stars in the build-up to the match.
While there’s obvious marketing value that comes out of HBO announcing “The Match, 24/7” on Monday, there’s also the reality that golf fans are going to get to see a behind-the-scenes look at how Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson live their lives and prepare for a particularly enormous payday in the run-up to the Nov. 23 match.

The HBO series typically follows boxers or hockey teams in the lead-up to other big-time events, but for golf nerds everywhere — including those on the fence about shelling out $19.99 on Black Friday for a golf match — the four-episode run of “The Match, 24/7” will likely do nothing but whet the appetite for those craving unique golf content in the offseason months.
“24/7 The Match: Tiger vs. Phil will go inside the ropes before their showdown to provide an all-encompassing look at the careers of these two superstars and their long-anticipated road to this head-to-head competition,” HBO’s release said. “For years, Tiger and Phil have been the biggest attractions in professional golf and flirted with the idea of a high-stakes, winner-takes-all event. With both golf legends in the PGA Tour Rankings top-25, The Match will finally settle the score.”
The first episode of the mini-series begins Nov. 13 at 10 p.m. EST.
