Tiger Woods turned back the clock to start the weather-delayed third round on Saturday at the Genesis Open, and to continue to do so, he’s setting his alarm clock for an ungodly hour.
Woods played the first four holes of Riviera Country Club’s back nine in 5-under par to jump 38 spots on the leaderboard into a tie for 14th place before darkness forced a stoppage of play.
With a marathon Sunday on deck, the PGA Tour will attempt to get the 76 Tour pros who made the cut to finish their third and fourth rounds before the sun sets on the Hollywood hills.
In order to do so, a restart has been scheduled for 6:45 a.m. PST, but for Tiger, his day will start nearly five hours earlier.
“Probably get up somewhere around 2 or 3 [a.m.] and start the process,” Woods said. “This has been a long week and we’re almost done.”
Of course, Tiger isn’t the only one who has to endure early wake-up calls. Jordan Spieth, who sits one shot ahead of Woods entering Sunday, has been waking up unusually early for the last week-plus thanks to adverse weather conditions both at Riviera and at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am last week.
“This has been something like seven out of eight days I’ve been up at 5 a.m., so that’s tough, and (Sunday) is no different,” Spieth said.
With hopes of fitting everything in on Sunday, the PGA Tour is not planning to regroup the players by score following the completion of the third round. Instead, players will finish their third rounds, sign their cards and be ushered back to the tee to begin their final rounds.
