Just because Tiger Woods hasn’t been out playing in the biggest events in the world doesn’t mean he hasn’t been paying attention. Sky Sports caught up U.S. Captain Davis Love III at this past weekend’s PGA Championship to see where the American skipper was in his picking procedure. Amidst talk about Phil Mickelson, Jordan Spieth and Jim Furyk, DL3 let slip that Tiger had already made his four captains recommendations.
If qualifying ended today, the U.S. Ryder Cup team would be made up of Dustin Johnson, Spieth, Mickelson, Jimmy Walker, Brooks Koepka, Zach Johnson, J.B. Holmes and Brandt Snedeker with Bubba Watson, Patrick Reed, Matt Kuchar and Rickie Fowler on the outside looking it.
It’s almost too easy at this point. Love III can just ride with the top-12 in the points standings. Of course, things are likely going to change between now and September 11 when he makes his first three captain’s picks. And then, on Sept. 25, Love III will make his fourth and final pick. Things are still in flux and Tiger’s picks likely will be, too.
One interesting Ryder Cup note I’d forgotten: Love’s last captain’s pick will be the Sunday before the RC. Could literally be anyone.
