Tiger Woods’ first round of action in an official full-field PGA Tour event in a year went about as planned.
The round featured moments of rust offset by some swings that suggested better days are ahead. And all in all, Woods grinded out an even-par round that had him leaving the course healthy, which was the biggest concern coming into the week.
The story of the day, however, was Woods’ approach at the par-3 16th hole on the South Course. Sitting at 1-over par for the day, the 14-time major champion hoisted a 6-iron towards the flag at the 188-yard hole and waited for a reaction from the crowd because he couldn’t see the ball land. The reaction came and it told him everything he needed to know.

Woods went on to par the final two holes of his round to finish in a tie for 83rd, seven shots behind first-round leader Tony Finau. Woods will play the North Course at Torrey Pines on Friday, teeing off at 12:30 p.m. EST alongside Patrick Reed and Charley Hoffman.
