Tony Finau’s first Masters will be one that he, nor anyone else, will forget for a very long time.
The 28-year old Tongan from American Samoa was one of the dark-horse favorites entering the tournament, then put it in jeopardy incredibly dislocating an ankle celebrating a hole-in-one during the Par-3 Contest. Finau toughed it out at the Masters and was in the mix for much of the week.
Anyone who thinks golfers aren’t tough should take a look at Finau finishing in the money with torn ligaments in his ankle. He finished in a tie for 10th at his first Masters.

“The hole-in-one was spectacular, following up by the most embarrassing (moment) in my life,” Finau said. “Who knows, if I’m healthy, if I played better, if I played worse. All I know is that I did my best for the circumstance that I had, and came out with a nice finish this week.

Finau’s family was on hand to see the ups, downs and eventually a top-10 finish, which ensures him a spot in next year’s Masters. Finau wasn’t one to run away from the embarrassment with his ankle. Instead, he shot a 68 in the opening round, a stunning performance considering the injury. Finau struggled on Friday and Saturday before a final round 66. With it, he made sure that he will get a Masters bid for 2019.
“To be on the back nine at Augusta on a Sunday, to be playing some good golf, it doesn’t get much better,” Finau said.
With how Finau’s week started, he couldn’t ask for a better finish.
