Tree Causes Explosion At PGA Tour Latinoamerica Event

Adverse weather conditions at a PGA Tour Latinoamerica event this week resulted in a terrifying moment for players and fans alike.

With steady rain and storms rolling through the site of the 88 Abierto OSDE del Centro presentado por FiberCorp-Telecom in Cordoba, Argentina, a tree near the 10th green was struck by lightning and fell into a nearby powerline.


With a small fire ignited originally, the tree and power line eventually resulted in an explosion that sent fans and players running.

Afortunadamente nadie resultó afectado y no pasó de ser un susto para los jugadores que estaban por salir en el tee del 11. A esta hora las autoridades locales trabajan en limpiar el area para restablecer la electricidad. El torneo ha continuado con total normalidad. “With all the rain this week, a tree fell onto the power lines by the 10th green, causing a small fire and a big explosion at 10:10 am,” the PGA Tour Latinoamerica Instagram post was captioned. “Fortunately, nobody was hurt. It was a scary moment for the players who were about to tee off on No. 11. There’s no power at the club right now and local authorities are working on cleaning the area and getting the lines back up. Play has not been affected by this.”

Surprisingly, the event is on schedule with three rounds in the books. Canadian Russell Budd holds a two-stroke lead entering the final round over American Nicolo Galletti. 

Former Masters champion and Cordoba native Angel Cabrera played in the event, but he was cut after rounds of 78 and 72.
