In September, the Royal & Ancient Golf Club and it’s 2,400 members voted to allow female members into the club for the first time. On Tuesday, we found out who the seven lucky ones were.
The most prominent name is also arguably the most famous women’s golfer of all-time — Annika Sorenstam.
“I was thrilled when I heard the Royal & Ancient golf club would admit female members,” Sorenstam said in a statement. “To be selected as one of the first is a tremendous honor. I will continue to do my best to represent women and the Royal & Ancient Golf Club while providing opportunities for our youth to play.”

The others chosen by the R&A were Laura Davies, Belle Robertson, Lally Segard, Renee Powell, Louise Suggs and Britain’s Princess Anne.
“This is an historic day for the club and we could not be more proud also to welcome women who have distinguished themselves in golf over many years and have been great players and champions,” R&A captain George Macgregor said. “They are extremely worthy additions to our roll of honorary members and will become ambassadors for the club as they have been for the sport of golf throughout their careers.”
