Peyton Manning Joins Celebrity Field at Pebble Beach

Still licking his wounds from the shellacking he and the Denver Broncos took from the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XLVIII, Peyton Manning is heading to Pebble Beach for some golf. But it won’t just be a relaxing time on the course; it’s for the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.

The reigning NFL MVP’s appearance was confirmed Tuesday, and on Wednesday morning he was paired with PGA Tour pro Scott Langley, a 24-year-old who’s in his second year on tour. Born in Illinois, Langley says his NFL loyalties are with the Green Bay Packers, meaning he’d probably rather play with Aaron Rodgers, the Packers QB who is also in Pebble Beach. Nonetheless, Langley is not a Seahawks fan.

The pro most eager to play with Manning would probably have to be the only Broncos fan that enjoyed Sunday: Kevin Stadler, who claimed his first career PGA Tour victory just three days ago at the Waste Management Phoenix Open. Instead, Stadler will partner with Florida governor Jeb Bush.

Regardless, Manning figures to be among the better celebrities playing, as he’s listed as currently having a 7 handicap. This year will mark his second start in the AT&T National, as Manning played with Webb Simpson in 2009. The tournament features a unique format in which every pro is partnered with an amateur for the first three days and the best 25 teams then advance to Sunday’s finale.

In addition to Manning and Rodgers, the other NFL quarterbacks in the field are New England’s Tom Brady and Kansas City’s Alex Smith. Brady’s coach, Bill Belichick, is also in Pebble Beach, and actually played a practice round Wednesday with Manning. Manning and the Patriots, of course, are longtime football rivals, their last meeting coming last month in the AFC Championship game, which Denver won to advance to the Super Bowl.

We imagine there was little talk about football on the golf course.

Not on hand this week is Tiger Woods, a friend of Manning’s who played with the quarterback in pro-ams at the 2009 Wells Fargo Championship and the 2005 Arnold Palmer Invitational.

Also absent will be pros Ryan Moore and Andres Gonzales, noted Seahawks fans. No word on whether or not they’ll be attending the Seahawks’ Super Bowl parade in Seattle – something Manning wishes were taking place in Denver. But playing some golf at Pebble Beach is a nice consolation.
