Travelers Renews as PGA Tour Event Sponsor For 10 More Years

Travelers Insurance has announced that it has reached an agreement to remain the title sponsor of the PGA Tour’s Travelers Championship for the next 10 years. In a time where an uncertain economy creates turnover in title sponsors of sporting venues and events, at least one thing is now certain for the next decade.

“We are pleased to continue our relationship with the PGA Tour, which ensures that more than 100 non-profit organizations across the region will continue to benefit from Connecticut’s premier golf tournament,” said Jay Fishman, Chairman and CEO of Travelers. “The tournament has grown tremendously in the last seven years and has exceeded our expectations. With this agreement, we will continue to build on this world-class event for the fans, the players, our employees and our community.”

“We have no better partner on the PGA Tour than Travelers,” said PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem. “Jay, Andy (Bessette), the entire executive team, the entire company, has dedicated themselves to try to make this tournament as good as it can be.”

Travelers became the title sponsor of the former Greater Hartford Open in 2007 and since has given more than $7 million to regional charities. The event runs with the help of more than 4,500 volunteers, nearly a 1,000 of which are also Travelers employees.

Tournament Director Nathan Grube said, “Travelers has been incredibly supportive and dedicated to the success of this tournament. Travelers has been very active in terms of promoting the tournament and engaging the community in it, and has encouraged its employees to become involved as volunteers. It is a wonderful partnership.”

Connecticut Governor Dannel P. Malloy’s office said via Twitter, “You can’t talk about 4,500 volunteers showing up in a weekend and not talk about what that says to the state.”

“This is who we are, this who Travelers is,” said Andy Bessette, Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer of Travelers. “We don’t wake up one day and say, ‘During tournament week we’re going to be all about community and all about charity.’ We’re about that 365 days a year.”

“The Travelers Championship is an important part of the sports history in Connecticut and has presented us a tremendous opportunity to support the community and charities throughout the region,” Fishman said. “Our sponsorship of the Travelers Championship has been a great investment for the community and our business.”
