Weekend Recap: Jimmy Walker, Cheyenne Woods Big Winners

Jimmy Walker nearly gave away the title at Pebble Beach, Tiger Woods’ niece collected a massive victory in Australia, and George Coetzee found his first pro victory in South Africa. A look back at the weekend in golf:

Jimmy Walker walks with third title of young season
Jimmy Walker played 187 tournaments before winning for the first time on the PGA Tour back in October. But it’s only taken him seven more events to win two more times. The 35-year-old started Sunday at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am with a six-shot lead, but after four bogeys among his back nine, he ended it only one shot clear of Dustin Johnson and Jim Renner. Still, Walker and his 11-under 276 will take the win and the $1.188 million that comes with it. All was not lost for Renner, however, as he and Consolidated Restaurant Operations CEO John Harkey Jr. took the pro-am competition (31-under), while Johnson and his famous father-in-law-to-be, Wayne Gretzky, finished eighth (-24).

Cheyenne Woods notches first major professional title
Though her victory came with much less drama, Cheyenne Woods also entered Sunday with the lead and held on to it. Her 4-under 69 in the final round of the Australian Ladies Masters gave the Back9Network ambassador her first major tour victory as a professional. After starting the day with a one-shot lead, Woods’ 16-under 276 at Royal Pines Resort in Queensland’s Gold Coast was two strokes better than Australian amateur Minjee Lee.

I can’t even begin to explain how special today was. Thank you everyone for your support!!! #blessed

George Coetzee’s comeback nets his first win
Out on the men’s European Tour, South Africa’s George Coetzee collected his first European Tour title at the Joburg Open in Johannesburg, South Africa. He carded six birdies and no bogeys en route to a 6-under 66 on Sunday and a 19-under 268 overall. That erased the four-shot deficit he faced to start the final round, and left him three strokes in front of Tyrrell Hatton, Jin Jeong and Justin Walters. “I got to share this with my family and my friends,” Coetzee said. “It was my mum’s birthday yesterday and I wanted to do it for her as I forgot to buy her a present.”
