A good rule of thumb to follow when wondering how often you should regrip your clubs is to do so every 30 rounds, or at least once a year. This may vary depending on the type of grip and the amount of practice you put in.
There also may be clubs in your bag that are used more frequently causing the grips on those clubs to wear quicker (e.g., wedges, driver). These clubs may need to be regripped more often than the others.
Here are some things to look for when determining if your grips need to be changed:
- Smooth, hard surfaces
- Cracks
- Shiny patches
- Wear spots, especially where the thumbs make contact
- Faded or bare spots on grips that have been painted or have logos
- Complete loss of tack
If any of these are found in your grip, then it should be replaced. Damaged grips can have an effect on your hand placement, feel and more, which makes the game even harder than it already is. It may be a bit pricey, but it’s one of those things that needs to be done.
