It seems obvious, but there are two major reasons why hitting the ball in the center of the clubface is important: it helps the ball to go farther, and it keeps the club from twisting through impact. Creating a gate for your strikes, you can hit a few balls and get immediate feedback as to what your tendencies are to help develop more consistent center contact.
