There are two strategies anytime you find yourself with a fried egg or plugged lie. One is a square clubface that chops down, making sure the sand underneath the ball comes out – and the ball with it. That will be your hit-and-chase option.
The other option, which can be a little riskier, will help you to get the ball to stop faster. When you come into the sand, you want to feel like you’re recoiling off the ball and that backwards motion will create some friction and height to your shot, giving you some level of control and softness. The downside is that you can only hit it so far.
